I · Origins & formation — 1939 to 1971

2 July 1939

Born in Sharjah

Born to Sheikh Muhammad bin Saqr bin Khalid Al Qasimi and Sheikha Maryam bint Ghanem bin Salem Al Shamsi, in a Sharjah that formed part of the Trucial States under British protection and whose pearling economy had collapsed the previous decade.

From 1948

Schooling across three cities

Elementary and secondary education pursued in Sharjah, Kuwait City and Dubai — a reflection of how little formal secondary provision existed on the Trucial coast at the time, and of Kuwait's earlier development of a school system.

1965

Head of the Municipality of Sharjah

His first administrative office, taken in his mid-twenties. The municipality was then the emirate's principal instrument of local government.

1970

Restoration of Al Hisn fort

He directed the restoration of the eighteenth-century fort at the centre of the old town, at a moment when the district was being cleared for redevelopment. It is the earliest documented instance of the heritage priority that would define his rule.

1971

Graduation from Cairo University

Bachelor of Science in agricultural engineering. He returned to Sharjah and took charge of the Ruler's Office in the months before the federation was formed.

2 December 1971

The United Arab Emirates is established

The federation was proclaimed, replacing the Trucial States Council and establishing the Federal Supreme Council as the country's highest constitutional authority.

9 December 1971

First Minister of Education of the UAE

Appointed to the founding federal cabinet, holding the education portfolio until 19 February 1972. The new state placed education among its first ministries; he would spend the next half-century acting on that premise.

II · Accession & consolidation — 1972 to 1989

25 January 1972

Ruler of Sharjah; Member of the Federal Supreme Council

He acceded to the rulership at thirty-two, following the death of his brother Sheikh Khalid bin Muhammad Al Qasimi during an attempted coup, and took Sharjah's permanent seat on the Federal Supreme Council.

10 February 1972

Ras Al Khaimah joins the federation

The seventh emirate acceded shortly after the six founders, completing the Federal Supreme Council in the composition it retains today.

1982

The Sharjah International Book Fair is founded

Launched under his patronage to build a reading public. It has run annually ever since, becoming the largest book fair in the Arab world and, for more than three decades, operating under the auspices of UNESCO.

1983

First honorary doctorate

An honorary doctorate in science from the University of Faisalabad — the first of some nineteen honorary degrees conferred by universities across four continents over the following decades.

1985

PhD in History, University of Exeter

Awarded for archival research into the nineteenth-century Gulf, undertaken while serving as Ruler of Sharjah and as a member of the Federal Supreme Council.

1986

The Myth of Arab Piracy in the Gulf is published

His doctoral research appeared in book form, arguing from British archival sources that the characterisation of the Qawasim as pirates had served to justify British naval intervention in the lower Gulf. It remains his most cited scholarly work. The same year he received an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Khartoum.

June 1987

Brief removal from office, and restoration

His brother Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Muhammad Al Qasimi announced his removal from the rulership. The episode lasted approximately a week and was settled through mediation among the members of the Federal Supreme Council, after which he was restored. It remains the only interruption to his rule.

III · Building the institutions — 1990 to 2009

1994

The Journals of David Seton in the Gulf, 1800–1809

An edited edition of a British official's journals from the opening of the nineteenth century — publishing the primary record rather than only arguing from it.

1996

The White Shaikh

A novel set in early nineteenth-century Oman, and an early example of the historical fiction that runs alongside his academic writing.

The American University of Sharjah admitted its first students and the University of Sharjah began operating. He became president of both, and the two institutions formed the nucleus of University City.

What the chronology adds up to

The legacy page steps back from the sequence to assess the institutional, cultural and scholarly record as a whole.
